Adidas Preditor Premier 7 a-sides
South East regional finals played at Douglas Eyre Sports Centre on Saturday 31st March 2001
ESFA ADIDAS PREDATOR PREMIER 7-A-SIDES
Hackney's Under 11's missed out on a glamour trip to Old Trafford but nevertheless gave a good account of themselves in the Regional Reound of this prestigious
competition.
The competition had to be played on a restricted area owing to organisational difficulties and was reduced to 6-a-side. This upset Hackney's tactical plans and they lost narrowly 1- 0 in their first Group B match against Surrey champions, Croydon. They then gave as good they they got against a lively Newham side from Essex but again went diown by the only goal.
Hackney's luck then changed as they gained a desreved 0-0 draw against Peterborough (Cambs.) and, inspired by some sharp goalkeeping by Thomas and the drive of Osei-Poku in mid-field, clinched a 2-1 win over Lewes (Sussex) who had been leading the group at that stage.
A narrow 1-0 defeat against Chiltern & South Bucks completed Hackney's programme as Newham clinched group top spot by drawing with Lewes.
In the Final, Luton (Beds.) eased out Newham on penalties and will now represent the South-East in the National finals.
Hackney Squad: Thomas (Holmleigh), Atherley-Buckridge (St. John of
Jerusalem),
Thomas (Orchard), McCredie, Yilmaz (Millfields), McIntyre (Baden Powell), Langsdon (Grazebrook), Gordon (Daubeney), Osei-Poku (St. Thomas's).
* Hackney Under 11's leave on Saturday for their annual trip to the week-long Jersey Festival. Over 2,000 has been raised locally to support the trip and the local lads will look forward to meeting association teams from as far apart as Plymouth and Bishop Auckland.
Five full England internationals played in the Festival as eleven-year olds (Tony Adams (Barking & Dagenham), Graham Le Saux (Jersey), Michael Owen (Deeside), Neil Webb (Reading) and Hackney's own Ugo Ehiogu. Perhaps the 2001 Festival will produce a new crop of stars in years to come!
