JERSEY FESTIVAL
Hackney Under 11's have just returned from the Channel Islands after yet another successful week at the prestigious Jersey Festival. This year's squad just failed to equal last year's achievements but recorded a highly creditable tally of four wins, a draw and just one defeat in the week-long tournament.
The key to their success was a great team spirit and thorough preparation. This was soon evident when Hackney beat Chiltern & South Bucks. 2-0 in their opening match
with goals from Dominic Suckley and Tashan Lewis. Lewis was again on target after just two minutes against a strong Gloucester side but Hackney slid to a 6-1 defeat, their only reverse of the Festival.
The Londoners returned to form with a narrow 1-0 win over Jersey Wanderers Under 12's. Goalkeeper Jonathon Daniel showed his best form of the season and Lewis notched his third goal of the week to clinch victory.
A hard-fought 0-0 draw followed against the powerful Walsall team and then, in the final group match, Hackney faced hosts Jersey. Playing with spirit and determination, Hackney went ahead after just four minutes when Karmah DuBerry shrugged off several challenges to slot the ball home. Jersey's pace and slick passing then gave them the edge, but on a rare break, Scott Doody volleyed his first goal of the season following good work by Lareace Thomas before the home side reduced the arrears. Daniel then came off his line to make a number of vital clearances as Hackney held on to their narrow lead.
Plymouth provided strong opposition in the final play-off match but Hackney early offensive produced two goals through DuBerry and a Lewis penalty. DuBerry added
a third before the interval and Jordan Thomas and Carlo Thomas completed a 5-0 over the deflated Devon side.
