Case Study:  Taywood Engineering

Protovale “Deep Cover” Meter

In 1999 Taywood Engineering held discussions with Protovale with the aim of finding an instrument to accurately identify the location of fixings, reinforcement and structural steelwork embedded up to 300mm in masonry walling.
The instrument was to be used to locate all iron and steel work to allow the bonding-in of any stray metal components during the installation of Cathodic Protection systems used to prevent corrosion damage to the masonry of early 20th Century steel framed buildings.

In use Protovale Meter in use
Instrument accurately locates the steel column (vertical chalk lines) and 6mm diameter reinforcement bar (horizontal chalk line) wrapped around column.
Core hole confirms bar location.
Results
As a result of the discussions Protovale decided to supply one of their powerful metal detectors, the Totalscan TS2, with a plain 150mm coil which was able to accurately detect small metal fixings to a depth of 300mm. This combination has proven to be highly successful and to date has been used during the installation of cathodic protection systems on:

  • St Andrews House, Edinburgh - The Scottish Executive
  • Blackfriars Hotel, London
  • Summit House, London
  • Buxton Memorial, London
  • Selfridges Department Store, London
