My career so far

I was born and bred in Leeds, and studied for my Dental degree at Leeds University. After five years of hard work I qualified in 1980.

I practised for five years in Bradford, in two very different practices in the city. After this I joined Dr Geoffrey Rose in Horsforth, (as well as a few months in Barnsley) where my interest in high quality, precision dentistry continued to grow. I was especially inspired by hearing Dr Jan Pamejier speak at a conference held in Harrogate in 1988.

In 1989, my good friend from student days, David Mason, invited me to be his partner in the practice that he had taken over from Colin White and Derek Sacks. When I joined the practice we moved to new premises in Empire Arcade.

In 1992 we realised that the sort of dentistry that was best for our patients and that we wanted to practice was not possible within the National Health Service, and we began the move to the private sector. We embraced the Denplan capitation system as the best way to provide ongoing quality care for our patients.

At the start of 1996, David Mason decided that his career lay in other directions and very amicably we parted. David has been spending some of his time developing his music, being involved in the local bands Elk and Sparrowhawk. He can be seen playing in several venues in Yorkshire.

Since 1996 I have continued to develop the practice to provide the right environment to deliver high quality dental care, in a friendly and relaxed way. The practice has gone from strength to strength and continued to win awards for our patient care and satisfaction.

My professional interests

My main interests are in restorative dentistry, cosmetic or aesthetic dentistry, endodontics and periodontics. I studied with Dr Paul Tipton in Manchester for two years, completing his Advanced Restorative Dentistry course, and am a member of the St Annes's Post Graduate Dental Society founded by Dr Tipton. I have more recently completed a residential course in Implantology. I know my limitations and I refer patients to other specialists for the surgical phase of implantology and for orthodontics as well as some other surgical procedures.

I continue to seek to improve my clinical skills and knowledge by attending courses and seminars. The pace of change in dentistry continues to increase and it is important to keep up to date with the latest techniques and materials. I always value hearing from dentists in other parts of the world about how they do things. I also take part in several peer review projects where other dentists meet to scrutinize the way we carry out and organize procedures in order to maintain best practice. I am a great believer in dentists talking to each other!

I help represent my local colleagues as a member of the Leeds Local Dental Committee and the advise the Leeds Health Authority as a member of the Leeds Oral Health Advisory Group. I am also involved with looking at the implementation of Clinical Governance into all the Health Professions. I also belong to the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners at the Royal College of Surgeons, and am a member of the British Endodontic Society , and the British Dental Association

Outside Dentistry

Although I enjoy my profession, there is more to life. I have a passion for mountains and Scottish winter climbing, as well as hill walking and rock climbing. I enjoy my mountain bike and often use it to commute into Leeds. I also enjoy photography, cars, music and food and wine and beer. Try Black Sheep from Masham in North Yorkshire! My wife Jane and I are fond of travel both in the UK and abroad. I also quite like using computers (when they behave!).

My good friend, the North Yorkshire writer Richard Wood who runs the Tykescript publishing company also enjoys Scottish mountains as seen here.
